Physical Comedy

This week we are learning about two physical comedians, Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton. Define physical comedy and describe two examples of physical comedy "stunts." Also, if we had a time machine that could transport these two actors/comedians from their late twenties to the present day, which of them do you think would be more successful in today's films, and why? (As always, write at least three complete sentences with proper mechanics.)

  1. Physical comedy to me is when someone does funny stunts to make it have more humor to the audience who are watching. It is also entertaining to watch. The 2 stunts i've seen most in the silent movies we've watched is either falling down, or running into things(: I like Chaplin better because I find him funnier and he just does crazy things when he acts. He's really good at physical comedy too, I've never seen an actor like him who can do so much & at the same time he makes it look like it's nothing. He's a very hard worker and it paid off. I like him the best.

  2. To me, physical comedy is when a person has a clownish exploitation of movement, and does funny stunts but with no talking. It is a phyisical performance relying mostly on the use of the body to make humour. Two stunts that I mostly adore is when they trip or either fall over. What I like about it is how they make it look so real in the video. And im pretty sure it takes a lot of strength and energy to do that. I like Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin, but I think I like Chaplin better, because he makes it look so real when he trips or falls in the video's that he makes. I think that Chaplin would be more successful because he was a true physical comedian.

  3. Rosa--I like your comment about Chaplin being a "hard worker" and I whole-heartedly agree. In life, one must work hard to be successful. I think Thomas Edison said it best when he said something like, "Opportunity is missed by most because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work."

  4. Physical comedy, to me it is when a extremely talented actor or actress can do their own hysterical stunts. Physical comedy should be something the audience would see as something funny, as well as something he or she is willing to do to make the audience laugh. Examples of physical comedy would be falling down, not just a trip but making it look goofy. Also running in to objects that might be hard to miss or hard to run in to. The actor/comedian that I think would be more successful would be Charlie Chapman. Mr. Chapman has a hilarious walk that you never see in movies made in our generation. He would bring in lots of comedy to movies, and make them more enjoyable.

  5. Physical comedy is when an actor or actress is entertaining an audience with movement, not words. For example, in one of Buster Keaton's films he had used numerous of funny "stunts." Such as, running across a moving train, and jumping off of tall buildings. Considering present day film is more so, different than films from the late twenties, in my opinion Buster Keaton would be a great success in present day films because of his outstanding humor and stunts. Keaton makes every movement so gracful and right to the point. Charlie Chapman's humor is good to, but when do you really receive a chance, to see an actor doing their own extremely dangerous stunts?

  6. Physical comedy is where an actor or actress does stunts rather than just talking. I personally like Buster Keaton. he is a really hard worker in my mind because he does all of his own stunts. If we could bring them to this time, I think Keaton would be a big star because he is a good actor and his comedy is more modern than Chaplin's.

  8. Physical comedy is when an actor does a bunch of stunts that invlove the whole body rather then little things. Like how Keaton does flips and other cool stuff. And if we had a time machine to bring back Chaplin or keaton, i would want to bring back Keaton only because he seem a little better than Chaplin and more in the 20th century.

  10. Physical comedy is all about body language. It is exactly what it says: physical. Two examples of physical comedy i see often is falling into something and being slapped/hit.I think chaplin would do better now if he had his reputation, but buster without the reputation. Buster is just too funny. XD

  11. I think physical comedy deals more with body language, rather than speaking, to convey humor. Two things that always make me laugh during physical comedy would have to be a man getting his in the private part, or someone falling into something gross. I would consider bringing Chaplin to the modern world because he definately knows how to bring out the humor in comedy.

  12. I think pjysical comedy is like, doing specific things to catch the audience into the movie. it reveals a lot of character and emotion of a actor/actress. if i could bring one of them back i would bring Buster Keaton. I would bring him because although his face has no emotion, i think his physical comedy is very hilarious. Also because he has more stunts than Chaplin.

  13. Physical conmedy is a clownish act that is mostly done with the entire body to express humor. Two examples of physical comedy would be walking into a wall or slapping yourself in the face.If I could bring either Buster or Chaplin back I would choose Chaplin. I would choose him because he was a very good comedian and had a cool personality. In todays films, he would be more succesful because he actually had expressions on his face, unlike Buster who was known as stone faced.

  15. I would define physical comedy as comedy without the use or need of words or sound to make the audience laugh. An example of physical comedy is falling down or off something or or getting hit by someone or thing. If I could use a time machine to bring Charlie Chaplin or Buster Keaton i would choose Buster Keaton because his acting is more in depth and i personaly thing he is funnier than Charlie Chaplin.

  16. Physical comedy is actions used to express humor without any words. Examples would be falling off something or doing things out of the ordinary. If I could bring either Chaplin or Buster back it would be Chaplin. I would bring him back because he is an excellent comedian and his comedy appealed to me more. I think he would be more sucessful because of the difference in their faces.

  17. Physical comedy is where the actor or actress will use a stunt to be funny rather than just using words. An example of this would be where an actor would just get hurt or hit by something and we would find it funny. If they were to be here right now in present day I would think that Charlie Chaplin would be more succesful in todays films. Charlie to me just seems funnier and his whole appereance i think would do better in todays films.

  18. Physical comedy is basically violent actions used for humor. The examples would be hitting someone or just doing something random, mostly something out of the ordinary. In my personal opinion i think that Charlie Chaplin would be very successful in todays film comedy because of all the original stunts preformed by him. He changed the world of physical comedy and the arts of filming.

  21. A capricious act in which actors, actresses, and comedians express hysterical moments using their own body's and even objects to gain laughter from the audience, using physical comedy. Many examples are displayed in physical comedy, such as falling off a two story building, landing safely in a car or eating a shoe for dinner and even stepping on a best friends violin at a recital, their are endless possibilities used to create a certain effect of humor. I believe that Charlie Chaplin's humor would flourish if he came here from a time machine, because his walk and physical actions he does, many people would honor him because he was a historical role model, if he came here. Chaplin has been worshiped for his physical comedy, don't get me wrong, but Buster Keaton was just as funny when using his blank expression, when doing his stunts. I simply believe Chaplin's humor would succeed greater because of the society we live in.

  22. Physical comedy is when the actor useshis actions to be funny not his words. Two stunts I've seen were the dancing bread and people just falling over. I think Buster Keaton would be more succesful because of his stone face.

  23. If i could teleport a comidian from the 20's to today. The most succseesful comedian right now i think would be keaton. His phisical comedy seems to be more modern then Chaplins is. Keaton is funny becuase he shows emotion. Unlike Charlie who shows oly a stone face.

About Me

My photo
I wouldn't call myself an expert at film history, but I've always had an interest in it. Years ago, I took my first film analysis class and it changed the way I thought about movies when I watched them. It opened my mind and broadened my perspective in a way that made movie watching so much more enjoyable. Now when I watch movies I'm able to look beyond the surface story and really dig into the heart of the film maker's message. I notice things like color and camera angles and it makes me feel like I know more about the movie than the average Joe. The whole movie experience has changed for me and I hope that this class opens the same doors for you as well.
