Color Symbolism

Now that you know a little bit about color symbolism in film, tell me why you think color symbolism is different in eastern versus western cultures. Also, why do you suppose colors became symbolic, or had meanings/emotions attached to them, in the first place? (As always, answer in at least three complete and grammatically correct sentences.)

  1. I think how color symbolism is different between Eastern and Western is how in the Eastern they wear white instead of black to funerals like how we do in the Western part. So that was intresting to learn. Also, I think color symbolism became important because if a character in a scene was sad, he/she would be wearing blue. Than it would be a little more obvious of how the character is feeling, and how the situation is.

  3. I think that the colors are different in other countries because they have had different influences/cultures in their lives,so everything is just different. I think that colors are symbloic now because of the same reason. As in, how colors in movie show emotions, for instence, if a character in a movie is wearing red, that most likely means love or danger. So every color has a MAJOR meaning.

  4. In my opinion, color symbolism is different in Eastern cultures versus Western cultures because they have different life styles and they learn different things which effects the way they use colors. Also, I think that colors are symbolic because in a movie when they are used they change the outlook on the scenerio that you are watching.Color symbolism is imortant in movies and they have changed a great effect on film today.

  5. I think color symbolism is different between eastern and western cultures because eastern cultures have different meanings for each color than the western culture. I believe colors were symbolic because they match the mood in a movie. Colors also make it clear what's going to happen in the movie or how the character is feeling.

  6. I think color symbolizes different things in different parts of the world because color symbolism is based off of cultural items like, roses symbolize love, and roses are commonly red and pink so red and pink also represent love. In eastern cultures different items symbolized different emotions which lead to different colors symbolizing different emotions from wester cultures. An example of this is in some eastern culture red was a common color for a wedding dress, where in western culture white is the common color for a wedding dress.

  7. Everyone has a different opinion about color symbolism, just like western and eastern cultures. The western wears black, as usual to a funeral, but the eastern wears white. I think the cause of this is just mainly on how the eastern cultures feel about certain colors based on their believes. Colors became symbolic even before movies were made. For example, some people are afraid of the dark, the dark is black and black represents fear and evil. Colors just helped movies be able to impact the audience more emotionally.

  9. Well I believe that the reason that they are different is because they are different cultures and the colors just mean something different to them. I think the reason colors became symbloic was because the way people looked at specific scenes in films they might have thought that a good color could have been fit for that scene. Also because they possibly thought that film needed more of a meaning so they decided to use color in films to describe scenes.

  10. Well I think that it is different because in the old days they could not communicate over long distances, so they just made up there own culture. The people are afraid of different things, so if something they fear is black, then they symbolize black as fear. In the western culture, maybe they were afraid of ghosts and ghosts are white so white symbolizes fear. Every one is different and they have different cultures.

  11. I think the reason color symbolism is different in the East and West is because colors make people feel different. People have different feelings about the way colors are placed. Maybe people in the East think of white when somebody dies, when people in the West think of black. I think color became symbolic because of the way colors make people feel.

  12. I think the color meanings are different because the two had different feelings about the colors. They didn't communicate with eachother just to agree on the color meanings. As for why the colors had meanings, I believe it was to give the viewer a taste of what was going to happen in the future of the movie.

  14. I thnk color sympolism are diffrent on diffrent on diffrent sides of the world because they have diffrent feelings about the colors. I think it became important so you know the kind of emotion that the scene is bringing out. It would be a little more obvious and make emotions easier to point out.

About Me

My photo
I wouldn't call myself an expert at film history, but I've always had an interest in it. Years ago, I took my first film analysis class and it changed the way I thought about movies when I watched them. It opened my mind and broadened my perspective in a way that made movie watching so much more enjoyable. Now when I watch movies I'm able to look beyond the surface story and really dig into the heart of the film maker's message. I notice things like color and camera angles and it makes me feel like I know more about the movie than the average Joe. The whole movie experience has changed for me and I hope that this class opens the same doors for you as well.
